Coffee Debate; #Paleo; #Bipolar
So, I had UTI problems again yesterday, about half-way in to my one cup of coffee. GRRR. So, I posted about it in a group on FB, and whined to my Mom about it. Some interesting suggestions came forth – low-acid coffee, bulletproof, cold-brew, etc. Now, I could buy special beans that are supposed to be low-acid, but research I did on cold-brew suggests that alone reduces acid by 70% versus hot-brew, so even if I use low-acid beans, I’m still not sure I shouldn’t switch to exclusively cold-brew.
That is another snarled mess, because I’m drinking it black to avoid dairy, and I love nothing more than an iced coffee – that moment the milk pours in & gets all interspersed with the ice cubes, etc. Art. I also think it defeats the purpose to heat up that amazing concoction that is cold-brew.
From what I gather, most people will add hot/boiling water to the cold-brew concentrate, so I guess that’s not as bad as nuking the cold-brew directly. I could make a very quick batch in my coffee press, like I do for my son – it wouldn’t have as much caffeine as a normal 12+ hour steep, but it would probably be enough to stave off a caffeine-withdrawal headache, and test the acidity hypothesis.
The other potential that came up is a gluten cross-reactivity. I don’t think that’s the problem, and my son who reacts immensely stronger to gluten is just fine w/ coffee, but it’s an interesting possibility.
How about you – if you are Paleo: Do you drink coffee & how do you do it? What beans, grind your own, hot- or cold-brew, how do you take it, etc?
I’ve heard about bulletproof for a while, but I’m not sure I’m ready to put my precious Kerrygold in my cup of black gold.

I eat mostly clean and do not want to give up coffee so I have made some concessions… I purchase organic, fair trade beans (ground) and make in a regular coffee pot (enough for three large-ish cups) and drink with almond milk. I don’t poo when I have too much dairy. So sad. Anyhoo…also have had uti issues for long time and I found that I must stay really really hydrated and I have no problems. Two glasses of water usually per cup of coffee. Always start my day with lots of water.. Hope that helps! I had a hard time switching to almond milk, but now prefer it…
