Food Porn, 4/15/11 & A Question for the Non-Botanically-Challenged

15Apr11

Nature’s candy:

Chicken drums, mashed roasted cauliflower & carrots, sauteed spinach & leeks:

Pig balls, roasted broccoli:

Cast-ironed pork chops w/ pan gravy (drippings, wine, thickened with coconut flour), and a sort of deconstructed lasagna w/ shredded zucchini, summer squash, tomato sauce, seasonings, parm, sharp cheddar, havarti, and mozz cheeses:

I was planning on making more strawberry ice cream, but the boy had other ideas. He wanted vanilla. The girl wanted chocolate. So, they both got their wish. I made a huge batch of ice cream based on this recipe: vanilla custard, except I used 2 quarts organic half & half, 1 pint organic heavy whipping cream, yolks from a dozen pastured eggs, honey, stevia, vanilla heated on the stove until it got thick. I then set aside 1/3 and added a melted bar of dark chocolate into it:

Tonight. Oh, tonight. EPIC! It was Iron Chef all up in here. Battle Pig. I baked 2.5 pounds of thick-cut hickory-smoked bacon. I put .5 lbs more bacon (what wouldn’t fit in my oven) in a sauteed cabbage dish. I made pig balls. This is what was on my dinner plate:

And, now for the question. Can anyone identify this:

It’s growing in our ‘garbage’ pot – where we put all the seeds from the food we ate last year. It could be anything, even a weed, but it’s the only one like this we’ve got. I want to give it a little more time before I yank it. If anyone can tell me what they think this is, I’ll be so grateful!

    No idea from first glance.
    Does it have a smell?
I’d be doing my Ayla imitation and chewing a smidge of it to see what it tastes like, with a water chaser in case it’s nasty. But that’s me.

    • It smells like a plant. Nothing obvious like mint or lemon. Taste is slightly bitter, but other than that, nothing really obvious.
